Managing multiple USB devices in industrial environments can quickly become complicated. Whether working with test equipment, embedded systems, medical devices, or industrial control hardware, engineers often need a reliable way to switch between multiple USB devices without constantly reconnecting cables or opening control enclosures.
The Prism Systems USB SwitchPro 12 was designed to solve exactly that problem.

What Is the USB SwitchPro 12?
The USB SwitchPro 12 allows a single USB host to selectively connect to one of up to twelve USB devices through independently controlled channels.
Unlike a traditional USB hub, the USB SwitchPro 12 activates only one device channel at a time. When a channel is selected, the USB host communicates directly with the connected device on that channel through a transparent passthrough connection.
Because the switch operates transparently, neither the USB host nor the connected device is affected by the multiplexing process.
Designed for Reliable Industrial Operation
Industrial environments often introduce challenges that standard USB hardware is not designed to handle. Long cable runs, electrical noise, and high-EMI environments can negatively impact signal integrity and device reliability.
To address these challenges, the USB SwitchPro 12 includes integrated USB signal conditioning components that help maintain reliable communication even when using longer USB cables or operating inside industrial control enclosures.
The system is housed in a rugged steel enclosure designed for demanding industrial applications and is available with an optional DIN rail mounting configuration for easier integration into control cabinets and automation systems.
Key Features
The USB SwitchPro 12 includes a range of features designed for flexibility and ease of integration:
Two dedicated USB bus connectors for the USB host
Transparent USB device passthrough
Dedicated USB control channel using a Virtual COM Port interface
Twelve individually selectable USB device channels
LED indication for the active channel
Power input through either a 5VDC barrel connector or 24VDC Phoenix-style terminal connector
Rugged steel enclosure for industrial environments
Optional DIN rail mounting support

Mounting
Reducing Downtime and Improving Safety
One of the most valuable advantages of the USB SwitchPro 12 is the ability to interact with multiple USB-connected systems without physically opening industrial control enclosures.
In many industrial and high-voltage environments, opening an enclosure can require shutdown procedures, safety protocols, and additional labor. By allowing USB devices to be switched externally, technicians can save significant time while minimizing unnecessary exposure to sensitive or high-voltage equipment.
Simple Cross-Platform Control Interface
The USB SwitchPro 12 uses a dedicated USB Control interface that appears to the host system as a standard USB Virtual COM Port.
This approach provides broad compatibility across modern operating systems, including:
Microsoft Windows
Linux
macOS
No additional hardware drivers are required.
Once connected, users can communicate with the device using standard serial terminal applications such as:
PuTTY
Tera Term
screen
Other compatible serial terminal tools
Easy Channel Selection and Configuration
The terminal-based control interface was designed to be straightforward and easy to use.
When connecting to the device, users are presented with system information including firmware version and the currently active USB channel.
From the interface, users can:
Select the active USB channel
Assign custom names to channels
View configured channel names
Modify or clear channel assignments
Access command syntax help directly from the interface
Channels may be selected either by channel number or by previously assigned channel name, making device management faster and more intuitive in larger systems.
Built for Flexible Integration
The USB SwitchPro 12 is well suited for a wide range of applications including:
Industrial automation systems
Embedded system development
Production testing environments
Medical and laboratory equipment
Device validation and diagnostics
Multi-device engineering workflows
By simplifying USB device management while maintaining reliable communication and industrial durability, the USB SwitchPro 12 provides an efficient solution for environments where reliability and accessibility are critical.
